Appearance: a first step towards the physical definition of leather aspect

ABSTRACT

The Leather aspect can be defined, either in crust or finished, by appearance interpretation. This allows us just by sight, to discriminate among different species (goatskin, sheepskin, bovine skins, reptile, etc.) and even a finishing type (crust, aniline, brush off, patent Leather, etc.).
Appearance is defined in terms of chromatic attributes and geometric attributes. The first allows us to define the plain colour (Black, Red, Green, etc.) while the second includes topographic characteristics such as density, deepness, and dimension of follicles, wrinkles, direction and combing sense of
fibers in nubuk and splits etc.), and physical such as retro reflectivity, pearlescence, opacity, specularity, etc).
The scope of this paper is to demonstrate how light can interact on colour definition of Leather articles, presenting the fundamental psychophysical variables, which may influence perception and which can lead to the instrumental total appearance definition.
